Dear EHPS Community,
As autumn arrives and the leaves begin to turn, October brings an essential annual reminder: Fire Prevention Month. Safe school environments remain a continuous priority in EHPS, where fire drills and safety protocols are reviewed on a monthly basis.
To help bring these vital lessons from our classrooms to your living room, here are key considerations to protect your home and loved ones:
-
Inspect & Test Smoke Alarms: Regularly test your smoke alarms and replace batteries as needed so your family gets an early warning in the event of an emergency.
-
Practice a Family Escape Plan: Map out two ways out of every room and establish an agreed-upon meeting spot outside. Practice the route together so everyone knows what to do.
-
Stay Attentive in the Kitchen: Unattended cooking is a leading cause of residential fires. Always remain in the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop, and keep flammable items like towels and packaging away from burner heat.
-
Rethink Open Flames: Exercise caution when using candles, and never leave them burning unattended. Consider switching to battery-operated LED candles as a safer alternative.
-
Check Electrical Outlets & Cords: Inspect household cords for fraying or damage, and avoid overloading outlets or power strips with too many high-draw devices.
-
Handle Lithium-Ion Batteries Safely: Most everyday electronics rely on lithium-ion batteries, which can overheat or ignite if damaged, overcharged, or used with incompatible chargers. Stick to manufacturer-approved equipment and avoid charging items on soft surfaces like beds or couches.
Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our school community informed and safe. We invite you to visit the National Fire Protection Association for additional resources and templates to assist in creating your household's fire safety plan.
In partnership,
Adam Swinney
Superintendent of Schools

We want to hear what life is really like for our students and families: what’s going well, what’s challenging, and what matters to you.
Each newsletter, we’ll share a little of what families are telling us!
Last time, we asked families to share their hopes and dreams for their children as they began a new school year. Their responses reflected a desire for their children to build meaningful relationships, discover their interests and aspirations, and grow in confidence. Above all, families hope their children feel safe, supported, happy, and valued as they navigate the year ahead.
We’d love to continue hearing from you!

Unexpected losses in our community can be confusing and scary for our children. Please know your school’s School-Based Health Care (SBHC) clinic has licensed behavioral health clinicians ready to help your child during difficult times.
Your child(ren) are welcome to speak with a SBHC clinician at school, or your family can call 475-231-6978 (Prompt 1 or 2 for English or Spanish, then Prompt 3) to connect with a support provider. This line can also be used to schedule a virtual visit.
For ongoing support, families are encouraged to enroll their students in SBHC services online at sbhc1.com/enroll.

Strong attendance is directly tied to academic success. Missing 2 or more days of school per month places a student in the category of being chronically absent—something we work hard to prevent, since attendance impacts learning at every stage of a child’s education. Please help us by continuing to make school attendance a top priority for your child. Our school teams look forward to working with you to ensure that every child attends school regularly and has the best possible opportunity to achieve.
