Dear EHPS Community,
Welcome to the start of the 2026-27 academic year! Our teams have been hard at work all summer long readying our school buildings and finalizing curricula updates. Today, our staff returned for their own back-to-school professional learning that will continue through Wednesday.
We are so appreciative of the ongoing community feedback that we receive. Based on that feedback, we will continue to share a bi-weekly district newsletter, however, we are shifting our distribution date to Mondays. This will hopefully reduce end of week messaging and ensure there is time to plan ahead for upcoming activities. Thank you for the input!
2026-27 promises to be a transformative year for student learning. You are essential partners in these efforts, and we looking forward to working with you to support our students' development.
On Thursday, August 27th we welcome all students back for the first day of school. Until then, best wishes for the final days of summer vacation.

Support our community's youngest innovators at the 1st East Haven Chamber of Commerce Kids Entrepreneur Fair on Saturday, August 29, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the East Haven Town Green.
Come cheer on local young entrepreneurs as they showcase the businesses they have created, developed, and marketed, while gaining valuable real-world experience. We hope you'll stop by, shop their booths, and celebrate our community's future business leaders!

For the second year, EHPS hosted the Summer Literacy Enrichment Program for students in grades K-3, emphasizing a continuation of students' instructional focus linked to their continued reading development. Additionally, Extended School Year was hosted for students in PreK all the way through Transition Programming. Finally, Overbrook sustained learning all summer long for our youngest Yellowjackets! |
Our Summer Reading Challenge has been enthusiastically embraced by students and families across East Haven, with a total, so far, of 395 individual student participants this summer throughout the district! We are especially grateful to our families for embracing these opportunities and sharing their student's summer reading experiences with us through photos and stories.
Students who participated in all eight weeks of the summer challenge will be recognized in the coming weeks. Don't forget! There is still time to submit final summer reading entries for Week 8 of our reading challenge!

Connecticut State Department of Education is now providing summative testing reports digitally. We plan to distribute these individual student assessment reports via ParentSquare by the end of the week.
Please note, this message pertains to students who were in Grades 3-8 last year and took the Smarter Balanced Assessment (ELA & Math). Additionally Next Generation Science Standards Assessment results will be made available for students who were in Grades 5, 8, or 11 last year.

It is critical that East Haven Public Schools has accurate phone numbers, addresses, and emergency contacts on file for every student. Up-to-date information allows us to reach you quickly in the event of an emergency, weather-related school closure, or urgent matter regarding your child. If your phone number, email, or home address has recently changed, please notify your child’s school office right away.
Keeping this information current ensures:
- You receive important notifications through our district messaging system.
- School staff can reach you immediately if your child is sick or there is an emergency.
- Transportation information (bus routes, stops, schedules) is accurate.
- Report cards, progress updates, and other communications are sent to the right place.

Per CT General Statute 10-231 schools will perform monthly fire and/or ALICE crisis response drills. Students will practice how to quickly exit the building or get to designated safety areas. During an actual emergency, both evacuation and safety are the first priorities. |

End of summer can be a challenging time to get an appointment with your child's pediatrician to update their health forms before the start of the new school year.
This year, one of the School Based Health Center's Registered Nurses is taking school physical appointment slots available on August 25, 2026. This is the only day students within the district may be seen at our SBHC center prior to the start of the school year.
If you need a physical for your child on August 25th, you will need to complete the online enrollment and register for an appointment slot prior to the date of the physical on August 25th.

Strong attendance is directly tied to academic success. Please help us by making school attendance a top priority for your child. This is especially important in the months leading up to winter cold and flu season.
Missing more than 2 days of school per month places a student in the category of being chronically absent—something we work hard to prevent, since attendance impacts learning at every stage of a child’s education.

Preschool: Building strong routines around attendance starts early. Even at age 3, developing the habit of coming to school every day sets the foundation for a child’s future success.

Elementary School: Research shows that students who miss more than 2 days per month are at risk of not reading on grade level by the end of grade 3—a key milestone for future achievement.

Middle School: Consistent attendance helps students stay connected to their peers, prepared for daily lessons, and ready to take on more rigorous coursework that builds the bridge to high school success.

High School: Attendance is directly tied to credit. Missing too many days of school may result in loss of course credit, which can prevent students from staying on track to graduate within four years. Daily attendance is one of the strongest indicators of graduating on time and being prepared for college, career, or the military.

The CCM #LoCoolGov Scholarship is a chance for students around the state to share their vision and make their voices heard by local leaders.
Connecticut middle and high school students can enter the LoCoolGov Scholarship Contest for a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship. Entries are due September 15, 2026. See the flyer for details and submission information and CLICK HERE for the contest overview.
Create an entry using this central question for inspiration: What is cool about local government? Have fun, and be creative with this project! You may choose to submit an essay, poem, photo, video, painting, multimedia project, or any other medium you find appropriate. Images of three-dimensional art will be accepted.
