District Newsletter

August 7, 2026
Dear EHPS Community,

We hope you are continuing to enjoy a safe, fun, and restful summer with family and friends. As the start of the new school year approaches, we wanted to reach out with a quick check-in as we begin gearing up for another fantastic year together.

We especially want to celebrate the incredible turnout for the Superintendent’s Summer Reading Challenge. We have been blown away by your engagement, with nearly 200 families participating every single week! Your dedication to keeping our students reading, learning, and exploring all summer long is inspiring.

We are now entering the final two weeks of the challenge, so let’s keep that momentum going strong! Keep turning those pages, discussing the weekly prompt, and finishing the program on a high note.

We look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Thursday, August 27th. Until then, we wish for your family a wonderful two and a half remaining weeks of summer vacation.

In partnership,
Adam Swinney, Superintendent
Summer Readers

As we prepare to begin a new school year...

our thoughts are on the many ways we can support our students and help them grow as healthy, happy, engaged learners.

Please take a few moments to complete this very brief survey on after-school programming. Gathering this important information from families will help us to better understand students' interests, as well as the needs and barriers that may impact participation.

We thank you for your time and your willingness to share your experiences.

Summer Learning Opportunities

Our Summer Learning Opportunities have been enthusiastically embraced by students and families throughout the summer, with many students taking advantage of the chance to continue learning beyond the classroom. It has been wonderful seeing pictures shared by families!

Through reading, independent inquiry, and engaging enrichment activities, students have maintained academic momentum while exploring new interests and developing greater independence. These experiences foster the curiosity, responsibility, and self-direction that are central to the East Haven Public Schools Vision of the Graduate, ensuring students return to school confident, inspired, and ready to learn.

Think about the question - What is cool about local government?

The CCM #LoCoolGov Scholarship is a chance for students around the state to share their vision and make their voices heard by local leaders.

Connecticut middle and high school students can enter the LoCoolGov Scholarship Contest for a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship. Entries are due September 15, 2026. See the flyer for details and submission information and CLICK HERE for the contest overview.

Create an entry using this central question for inspiration: What is cool about local government? Have fun, and be creative with this project! You may choose to submit an essay, poem, photo, video, painting, multimedia project, or any other medium you find appropriate. Images of three-dimensional art will be accepted.

Connection is the Key to Healthy Summer

Summer offers students and families a chance to relax, recharge, and make lasting memories, but it can also bring changes in routine and fewer opportunities for daily social connection. The Connecticut State Department of Education encourages families to make connection a priority by spending quality time together, staying engaged in community activities, and checking in regularly on children's emotional well-being. Youth who feel connected are more likely to thrive, both now and in the future.

As we enjoy the last half of the summer months, we encourage our families to build meaningful connections through everyday moments—whether it's sharing a meal, visiting the library, participating in local recreation programs, or simply taking time to talk.

If you are concerned about your child's mental health, remember that support is available, including Connecticut's 211 Youth Mobile Crisis services and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
