District Newsletter

May 8, 2026
Dear EHPS Community,

As we approach the final stretch of the school year, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for your continued partnership. We are currently in the midst of our end-of-year summative testing, and seeing our students engage so fully with these assessments has been truly inspiring.

While many sessions are complete, testing will continue across all of our schools over the coming weeks. To ensure our students can continue to perform at their best, we ask that you remain mindful:
  • Prioritize Rest: Consistent sleep schedules help students manage the mental stamina required to show what they know.
  • Practice Positive Self-Talk: Remind your students that these tests are simply a snapshot of their growth. Encouraging words at home can set a confident tone for the entire day.
  • Maintain Attendance: Regular, on-time attendance ensures that students can test in their familiar classroom environments with their peers, reducing "make-up day" stress.

If you are looking for more ways to support your child’s emotional well-being during high-stakes moments, I encourage you to listen to our latest episode of the Engagement Exchange podcast: From Challenges to Triumphs: Supporting Resilience in Students. It features fantastic insights on how we can work together to help our children work through stress and embrace challenges with a growth mindset.

Finally, thank you to everyone who made Teacher Appreciation Week so special. Your kindness and celebrations provided a wonderful tribute to the dedicated educators who work tirelessly for our students every day.

In partnership,
Adam Swinney, Superintendent

Overbrook’s “Night at the Museum” Showcases Play, Inquiry, and Creativity

Overbrook Early Learning Center recently wrapped up its 10-week Dinosaur Unit with a spectacular "Night at the Museum" family event. The school gymnasium was transformed into a student-led museum featuring large-scale sculptures, research projects, and interactive displays.

Throughout this unit, students explored science, literacy, and math through immersive, play-based learning. The event served as a wonderful celebration of student inquiry and the strong partnership between Overbrook families and staff.

Tuttle & SCSU Pen Pal Program

We are thrilled to highlight the inspiring pen pal program between SCSU’s Future Educators Club and Tuttle’s 4th-grade students. Under the guidance of teacher, Lisa Sandine, and Southern Connecticut State University NextGen Educator, Cole Brown, this partnership has allowed aspiring teachers to apply their coursework through meaningful correspondence with our students.

It has been a joy to witness our students’ growth and passion for learning reflected in their letters. By connecting with college mentors, we hope our students feel inspired to pursue their own future paths. Thank you to the SCSU Future Educators for their dedication to building these wonderful connections!

Honoring Our History: A Special Visit for 5th Graders

As part of East Haven’s America 250 celebrations, our 5th graders across all schools welcomed guest author and historian Robert Hubbard. This special event was coordinated in partnership with Town Hall, and we are grateful for their efforts to secure such an enriching experience for our students as they concluded their study of the American Revolution asking, “How can we promote life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all?”

Professor Hubbard highlighted Connecticut Heroes of the Revolutionary War, sharing the stories of figures like Jonathan Occum, Jordan Freeman, Sybil Ludington, and Israel Putnam. Joining him were representatives from the East Haven Historical Society, who attended in period-accurate attire to help bring history to life. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to see their classroom lessons come to life through our local heritage.

EHHS Health & Wellness Fair

The East Haven High School's annual Health and Wellness Fair was a tremendous success thanks to the collaboration and support of many dedicated community partners, vendors, staff members, and student leaders. Organizations including Fair Haven Community Health Care, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, East Shore District Health Department, Integrated Bilingual Counseling, Umbrella Center, local first responders, school-based health professionals, and numerous student-led groups provided engaging activities and valuable resources focused on physical health, mental wellness, safety, kindness, communication, and prevention education.

Strong student participation throughout the day helped create an energetic and positive atmosphere, while student volunteers played an important role in organizing tables, leading activities, welcoming peers, and supporting vendors. Their enthusiasm, leadership, and commitment to promoting wellness made the event both meaningful and memorable for the entire school community.

Athletic Spotlight

Golfer Vincenza Brown

East Haven High School is proud to spotlight golfer Vincenza Brown, whose passion for the game has been evident since she first picked up a club at just six years old through First Tee Golf at Yale Golf Course. That early experience helped shape her both as a player and as a person, and over time her love for the sport has grown into a deeper level of dedication. This past year marked an important milestone as she began her journey as a competitive golfer.

Looking ahead, Vincenza has set ambitious goals for herself, hoping to continue her golf career at the collegiate level, ideally in North Carolina, a region known for its strong golf tradition. She finds joy in both the personal satisfaction of a strong performance and the peaceful, scenic nature of the game, describing the feeling after a good round as unmatched.

Vincenza is deeply appreciative of the support system that has helped her along the way, including her family and coaches, whose encouragement has been instrumental in her development. Their guidance has contributed to her success, including setting the EHHS Girls Golf single match record with a score of 42. Focused on building confidence and continuing to grow, Vincenza embraces each challenge as an opportunity to improve. With her determination and love for the game, she is certainly a name to watch.

Attendance Matters

sibwy
Strong attendance is directly tied to academic success. Please help us by making school attendance a top priority for your child. Missing more than 2 days of school per month places a student in the category of being chronically absent—something we work hard to prevent, since attendance impacts learning at every stage of a child’s education.

Let’s partner together to ensure that every child attends school regularly and has the best possible opportunity to achieve.
