District Newsletter

February 27, 2026
Dear EHPS Community,

In our district, we believe that belonging doesn’t just happen by accident; it grows through intentional routines, meaningful relationships, and a shared commitment to kindness. Our goal is for every student to feel more than just present in a building—we want them to feel seen, valued, and connected.

We are fostering this sense of belonging by elevating student voice and shared responsibility. Whether it is through clubs, peer leadership opportunities, or coursework, we are working to move students from passive participants to active, trusted members of our community. We also use tools like Panorama surveys to listen to our students' lived experiences and ensure their voices shape our daily practices.

Families, you are our most vital partners in this work. You can support your child’s sense of connection by turning small moments at home into meaningful conversations. Instead of asking "How was your day?", consider asking about a positive interaction they had or a part of their day they were most proud of. These small, consistent choices tell our students that their experiences truly matter.

To learn more about our ongoing efforts to build a culture of connection, I encourage you to click here and listen to Engagement Exchange Episode 4: Building Belonging in Our Schools, hosted by Social Emotional Learning and Family Engagement Specialist, Stephanie Rivellini. This episode dives deeper into the practical ways we can all work together to ensure every member of our learning community feels they truly belong.

In partnership,
Adam Swinney, Interim Superintendent

District Highlights

February is Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month!

This month, we are proud to join schools across the nation in celebrating Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month. This is a time to recognize the essential programs that bridge the gap between high school and the "real world," preparing our students for high-wage, high-demand careers.

CTE is about more than just learning a trade; it’s about hands-on exploration. Whether our students are diving into healthcare, manufacturing, culinary arts, business, or video production, they are gaining the critical thinking and technical skills needed to lead in the 21st-century workforce.

East Haven Middle School Wrestling Finishes Undefeated Season

The East Haven Middle School Wrestling Team delivered a season to remember, finishing with a perfect 8–0 record and capturing an undefeated regular season. Through hard work, discipline, and a commitment to representing their schools with pride, the team set the standard for excellence on and off the mat.

This year’s success is especially meaningful as the program prepares to graduate six dedicated student athletes who have helped build the foundation for this accomplishment. Their leadership, perseverance, and competitive spirit have left a lasting impact on the team.

The future remains bright for the program, with seven wrestlers advancing to the Middle School State Championships on March 1st. Competing at the state level is a tremendous achievement and a testament to the team’s preparation and determination throughout the season.

The team’s success is guided by Head Coach Jeff Fletcher, along with assistant coaches Josh Rao, Jack Fletcher, and Gregory Antonucci. What makes this coaching staff particularly special is that each member is an alumnus of the East Haven wrestling program. Having once worn the same singlet, they now give back to the program that helped shape them, continuing a proud tradition of East Haven wrestling excellence.

Congratulations to the entire East Haven Middle School Wrestling Team on an outstanding undefeated season. Best of luck to the seven state qualifiers as they compete on March 1st. The entire East Haven community is behind you!

Vision of the Graduate "Unpack Your Day" Weekly Prompt

EHPS Backpack

"Unpack Your Day"

Use this prompt any day of the week to talk with your child about school, feelings, and daily experiences in a fun and meaningful way.

Week of 3/2: Who encouraged you today?

Week of 3/9: Did you share an idea with the class today? What was it?

Kindness: The Heart of our Vision

Did you know February is designated as National Random Acts of Kindness Month? Kindness is more than being nice. It is the foundation of our Vision of the Graduate attributes.

When students show kindness, they are becoming responsible citizens who care about their community. When they use thoughtful words and truly listen to others, they grow as powerful and effective communicators. Choosing kindness during conflict builds resourceful problem-solvers who look for solutions instead of blame. Sticking with friendships, apologizing when needed, and trying again after mistakes strengthens them as goal-directed and resilient individuals. And when students pause to consider how their actions impact others, they practice being informed thinkers.

Kindness shapes not only who our students are today, but who they are becoming!

As we wrap up February and welcome March, we invite families to continue this work at home through our Vision of the Graduate Learning Adventures: simple, meaningful activities designed to help children practice kindness and build these important attributes beyond the school day, strengthening the partnership between home and school in shaping who they are becoming.

Attendance Matters

Guidelines to Help Families Determine How Sick is Too Sick for School

Chronic absenteeism can often be driven by uncertainty about when children should stay home due to illness. Families are encouraged to use clear health guidelines when making this decision. Balancing student health with regular school attendance helps prevent the spread of illness while supporting consistent learning and strong attendance habits.

Send your child to school if...
  • Mild cough, runny nose, and no other symptoms.
  • Able to participate in normal activities.
  • Mild stomach ache without vomiting/diarrhea.

Keep them home if...
  • Fever: 100.4°F (38°C) or higher (must be fever-free for 24 hrs without medicine to return).
  • Vomiting/Diarrhea: More than twice in 24 hours, or watery stools (need 24 hrs without symptoms to return).
  • Sore Throat: Severe or with fever/swollen glands (may need antibiotics).
  • Rashes: With fever or behavior changes, or oozing/uncovered sores.
  • Behavior: Abnormally tired, irritable, pale, or unable to participate.
  • Cough: Heavy, persistent, or keeps them up all night.
