The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. Over the coming weeks, all schools will be conducting fire and crisis response drills, as required by Connecticut state law. Schools are required to hold at least one drill each month to ensure everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency.
We partner closely with the East Haven Police Department and East Haven Fire Department to make these drills as realistic and effective as possible. Practicing these procedures helps students and staff:
- Learn how to respond calmly and safely in the event of a fire, lockdown, or other emergency.
- Understand where to go, who to listen to, and what actions to take.
- Build confidence and preparedness so they are ready should a real emergency occur.
Please know that while these drills are serious, our staff takes care to guide students through them in a calm, age-appropriate way. They are an important step in keeping our schools safe and ensuring that every child knows what to do in an emergency situation.

It is critical that East Haven Public Schools has accurate phone numbers, addresses, and emergency contacts on file for every student. Up-to-date information allows us to reach you quickly in the event of an emergency, weather-related school closure, or urgent matter regarding your child. If your phone number, email, or home address has recently changed, please notify your child’s school office right away.
Keeping this information current ensures:
- You receive important notifications through our district messaging system.
- School staff can reach you immediately if your child is sick or there is an emergency.
- Transportation information (bus routes, stops, schedules) is accurate.
- Report cards, progress updates, and other communications are sent to the right place.
Maintaining accurate contact information helps us partner with you to keep your child safe, connected, and supported throughout the school year.

Strong attendance is directly tied to academic success. Please help us by making school attendance a top priority for your child. Missing more than 2 days of school per month places a student in the category of being chronically absent—something we work hard to prevent, since attendance impacts learning at every stage of a child’s education.
-
Preschool: Building strong routines around attendance starts early. Even at age 3, developing the habit of coming to school every day sets the foundation for a child’s future success.
-
Elementary School: Research shows that students who miss more than 2 days per month are at risk of not reading on grade level by the end of grade 3—a key milestone for future achievement.
-
Middle School: Consistent attendance helps students stay connected to their peers, prepared for daily lessons, and ready to take on more rigorous coursework that builds the bridge to high school success.
-
High School: Attendance is directly tied to credit. Missing too many days of school may result in loss of course credit, which can prevent students from staying on track to graduate within four years. Daily attendance is one of the strongest indicators of graduating on time and being prepared for college, career, or the military.
Let’s partner together to ensure that every child attends school regularly and has the best possible opportunity to achieve.

The annual East Haven Mayor's Merit Award is a high civic honor that recognizes residents of all ages across various categories. The "Merit Award Dinner" not only celebrates recipients but also serves as the official kickoff to the town's Fall Festival.
This year, two student recipients were honored: Dahna Lara (grade 7 at JMMS) and Max Parisi (grade 7 at EHA), They participated in Kid Governor and were recognized alongside their former teachers, Dana Palmieri and Jennifer Pierpont-Grayson.
Through their dedication and service, these students have positively impacted our community, and we are proud of their recognition by the Town of East Haven.

For Joshua Hutchinson, football has been a way of life since second grade, shaping both his athletic journey and his character. He credits his father for instilling the discipline and dedication that guide him on and off the field.
The lessons learned in football have carried into the classroom, where his hard work and determination earned him the honor of Junior Student of the Year at East Haven High School.
Now a team captain, Joshua leads by example, helping East Haven football develop not only strong athletes but strong young men prepared for success in school and in life.
