The goal of the art department is to provide a sound foundation in the Visual Arts and to foster both creative problem solving and critical thinking, an appreciation for both the art process and the art product. Active participation in the art program benefits not only those students interested in becoming artists but all students interested in becoming creative individuals.

ART FOUNDATION I
Course No. 7000 Credit: .5 (1/2 YR) Grades 9-12
Course No. 7001 Credit: .5(FY) Grades 9-12
Prerequisites: None
This course provides foundation experience in visual arts, exploring the elements and principles of design. It also explores a variety of concepts , approaches, media and methods in drawing, painting and basic design. It works with primarily two-dimensional dry and wet drawing and painting media. Line, shape, texture and space are stressed as well as developing observational skills and confidence in visual expression.

ART FOUNDATION II
Course No. 7020 Credit: .5 (1/2 YR) Grades 9-12
Prerequisites: Art I—passing grade of 70
This course further develops the skills and builds on the concepts introduced in Art I working in drawing, painting and design. Exploration of art elements and principles are continued. Form, value, color, and space are emphasized along with the principles of composition. New materials and concepts are introduced in both two-and three-dimensional areas.

INTERMEDIATE ART I
Course No. 7010 Credit: .5 (1/2 YR) Grades 10-12
Prerequisite: Art I AND Art II
While Art I and Art II explore the elements and principles of art, design, and composition; Intermediate Art continues this exploration in greater depth and progresses beyond basic level in construction and conception, to more complex forms and groupings. Students progress to human form in portrait and figure drawing ,as well as intermediate level perspective and composition problems in interior and exterior space, still life, and design.

INTERMEDIATE ART II (Sculpture)
Course No. 7015 Credit: .5 (1/2 YR) Grades 10-12
Prerequisite: Art I and Art II
Students work on projects that involve 3D design and sculptural concepts. Students explore lines, planes, volumes, mass, forms in a 3D/spatial context. Both additive and subtractive methods are used in both relief and sculpture-in-the-round, using both traditional and experimental sculptural materials.

ADVANCED ART I - DRAWING
Course No. 7080 Credit: 1 (1/2 YR DBL) Grades 10-12
Prerequisite: Art I and Art II
This course concentrates on advanced drawing problems and concepts and more complex forms.
It works with both dry and wet drawing media in black and white and color. It is intended for the advanced art student with a sincere interest in art in general and drawing in particular. The critique is used on a regular basis. Supervision and guidance are provided in the preparation of portfolios.

ADVANCED ART II - PAINTING
Course No. 7100 Credit: 1 (1/2 YR DBL) Grades 10-12
Prerequisite: Art I and Art II
This course is for the student with interest and ability in art and emphasizes painting in both opaque and transparent media. The student gets experience working with painting tools, materials, and techniques, as well as, a number of painting approaches and methods applied to a variety of subjects. As in Advanced Art I, portfolio development and group critique are major components of this course.

AP STUDIO ART IN DRAWING
Course No. 7110 Credit: 2 (FY DBL) Grades 11-12
Prerequisite: Art I, Art II, Advanced Art I; teacher recommendation
Advanced Placement in Studio Art (Drawing) is designed for students who are seriously interested in the further study and practice of art. It provides the opportunity for qualified students to take a foundation-level college course. It covers the instruction, skills, and projects found in the corresponding college course. Students will be involved in advanced drawing problems and the development of a portfolio specified by AP guidelines. Students may choose to submit this portfolio to the College Board for review and assessment and possible college credit.

INTRODUCTION TO FASHION DESIGN
Course No. 7180 Credit: .5 (1/2 YR) Grades 10-12
Prerequisite: Art II minimum grade of 70
Explore Fashion Design through the centuries. Study the history of fashion, textiles and accessories. Research contemporary fashion houses. Design your own apparel and accessories through drawings and paintings. Opportunity to create your own fashion designs. Field trip to the Museum of the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.
